LAS VEGAS, Nev. – To kick off the 2015 fall campaign, the Northern Arizona University women's tennis team competed in the Rebel Fall Invite at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas this past weekend (Sept. 25-27). After just two weeks of practice, the Lumberjacks' Blanka Szavay and Hanneke Lodewijks, a sophomore and freshman respectively, made a splash in their first showing this season upsetting No. 41 Ole Miss 8-6 to advance to the doubles finals.
"We had some outstanding results from our No. 1 doubles pair Blanka and Hanneke getting to the finals by beating the No. 41 ranked team in the nation," Head Coach Kim Bruno said. "I think we competed hard and well this weekend."
Right up there with Szavay and Lodewijks was freshman Eirene Granville who finished third place in the tournament defeating UNLV's Reka Szentes 6-4 and 6-3 in her final singles match. Northern Arizona was one of five teams that competed this weekend alongside UNLV, the University of Mississippi, the University of South Alabama and Long Beach State University.
"Eirene performed outstanding for a freshman and got better throughout her matches," Bruno commented. "I thought we all got better this weekend."
The Lumberjacks recorded a total of three singles wins and two doubles wins against a tough lineup of competition. They will look to continue their momentum into next weekend at the University of Arizona Fall Invite on Oct. 2 through Oct. 4.
