OGDEN, Utah – First, Lumberjack Classic Tournament MVP and on Monday, senior Janae Vander Ploeg was honored by the Big Sky office receiving conference Co-Player of the Week. Vander Ploeg shared the weekly honor with Idaho State's Makenzie Filer and overall, it is the outside hitter's second career Player of the Week nod.
Vander Ploeg guided the Northern Arizona volleyball team to a 3-0 weekend at home to win the Lumberjack Classic with victories over Houston Baptist, Liberty and Loyola Marymount. She averaged 4.82 kills per set and hit .328 to earn the tournament MVP award.
She saved her best performance for the tournament finale, which served as the championship match versus Loyola Marymount. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native carved up the Lions recording 26 kills, setting a new high mark for the season. The 26 kills was one shy of her career-high as she played a pivotal role in helping the Lumberjacks pull off the impressive victory. With NAU trailing late in the second set after already dropping the first set, Vander Ploeg notched nine kills to carry the 'Jacks to a 1-1 tie in the match on their way to a five-set victory to win the tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Vander Ploeg totaled 16 kills against just one error versus Houston Baptist, hitting a lifetime-best .455 in the three-set sweep. She later put together her team-leading third double-double of the season in NAU's sweep of Liberty with 11 kills and 10 digs without a hitting error.
Vander Ploeg currently leads the Big Sky with 103 total kills and 4.68 kills per set. She is off to an incredible start to her final season, hitting .322 and averaging 3.09 digs per set. Along with being named the Lumberjack Classic MVP, she was also named to the JMU Classic All-Tournament Team during the opening weekend of the 2015 season.
The Lumberjack volleyball team takes on No. 10 Arizona State Tuesday night in Tempe, Ariz. at 7 p.m. before traveling to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Invitational this weekend.
