Lumberjacks Pick Up Big Sky Road Win at Southern Utah, 73-63

Box Score CEDAR CITY, Utah – Five players scored in double figures as Northern Arizona (2-12, 1-2 BSC) topped Southern Utah (3-10, 1-2 BSC) on the road 73-63 to pick up its first Big Sky win of the season. The Lumberjacks led for the majority of the game and scored 23 points off turnovers to earn the victory.
Southern Utah led by as many as nine points with 11:39 to go in the first half. The Lumberjacks then gained a momentum of their own and rattled off 14 unanswered points to go up 22-17 with 7:26 to go in the first half. NAU did not relinquish the lead and instead entered the locker room with a 36-29 advantage. The Lumberjacks did a nice job of moving the ball coming away with 12 points in the paint and four three-pointers.
Kris Yanku and Marcus DeBerry had eight points apiece to start the game and give NAU a boost on the offensive forefront. It wasn't just Yanku and DeBerry as seven different players scored in the first half.
The Thunderbirds let the ball sail from behind the arc in the second half connecting on five treys. SUU's outside shooting allowed it to tie the game at 47-All with 11:13 remaining.
Yanku kept up his aggressive play in the second half tallying a double-double with eight minutes still left in the game. The junior guard registered 14 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Shortly after, Felix Rivera-Vega recorded his first career double-double finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Southern Utah did not lie down easy as it challenged NAU down to the final second, but this game was NAU's tonight. The Lumberjacks worked the ball on the inside and outside, boxed out, and made smart decisions down the stretch.
DeBerry finished with a team-high 18 points, including going 4 of 6 from three-point range. Also, scoring in double digits were Ako Kaluna (10) and Corey Brown (10).
Trey Kennedy led Southern Utah with 15 points, while Casey Oliverson chipped in 14 points.
