Andersen, Zienasellassie Earn Big Sky Athlete of the Week Selections

OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona University's Futsum Zienasellassie, one of the greatest Lumberjack track athletes all-time, and Brooke Andersen, a stellar field athlete in her own right, have both been named Big Sky Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend at Mountain T's.

Zienasellassie earned male track honors, while Andersen received the recognition for women's field. This is the third time in his Lumberjack career Zienasellassie has been named AOTW, while it is the fourth time for Andersen, only a redshirt-sophomore.

Zienasellassie added to his illustrious Lumberjack career last Saturday, running a 3:56.98 time in the mile event after altitude adjustment. That mark is currently the second-best in the nation, sitting just a mere .11 seconds behind the national leader. Zienasellassie also recorded the second-best mile time in Walkup Skydome history, behind former NAU track legend and Olympian Diego Estrada.

Because of his first-place performance Saturday afternoon, the mile run became the fourth event Zienasellassie has qualified for at conference competition later this month. The native of Indianapolis, Ind., has also qualified for the 800m, 3000m and 5000m events. The NAU redshirt-junior is the defending indoor champ in both the 3000m and 5000m events, and recently logged a career-best time in the 5000m (13:44.89) at the Hoosier Open in December, a time that ranks second nationally.

Andersen also had a career-day Saturday at the Mountain T's in the women's weight throw event, notching a 63 foot 8 3/4 inch (19.42m) mark for a second-place finish on the day. That personal-best throw for Andersen is currently tops in the conference and ranks 32nd nationally.

Andersen has competed in three weight throw events in 2016, and has recorded a mark good enough for conference competition in all three of those showings, tallying two first-place victories.

The Lumberjacks pick up their indoor season again in two weeks with the NAU Invite on Feb. 12 and 13. Some athletes will also travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic that same weekend.
