Iowa State Classic Full Results

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University track and field team competed in the second and final day of the NAU Invite and Iowa State Classic Saturday, putting together another strong slate of performances to close out the weekend.

"Coach McDaniel's analogy is that we're a plane and we're starting to descend to land at the conference meet, so we're right where we want to be as a team," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins.

The sprints unit showcased their depth and talent, with junior Nicole Fotinos logging a first-place and Big Sky qualifying time (56.23@) in the 400m race. Freshman Jasmine Malone also qualified in that event today, notching a second-place finish with a personal-record 56.58@ time. Additionally, redshirt-sophomore Ashley Taylor set a career-best in the 800m race with a first-place time of 2:14.36@.

Redshirt-senior JaShawn Combs broke his career-best mark in the 60m hurdles Saturday as well, finishing in second-place with a 8.17@ time. With that mark, Combs is now tied for the No. 1 ranking in the conference in the 60m hurdles.

For the distance squad, it was redshirt-sophomore Andy Trouard and freshman Geordie Beamish qualifying in the men's mile event at the ISU Classic. Trouard ran a 4:05.99 time while Beamish tallied a personal-best 4:07.59 mark.

"For [Beamish] to go over into a race like this at Iowa State and compete the way he did—run a lifetime best for the mile in February—is great," said Heins. "What he took away is that he just needs to get into more races like that so he knows what to expect."

"Trouard, same thing. He went for it and it was exciting to watch. Through 1,200m, he decided to go for it. He was leading the race at that point and just faded the last 150m, but he made that race fast for those guys. We're excited for what he's going to do in the next month or so."

It was redshirt-junior Sean Collins leading the way for the throws team this morning, finishing first in the men's shot put event with a 16.80m, 55-01.50 mark. That throw qualified Collins for conference championships later this month.

The women's 4x400m team capped off the weekend meet in first-place fashion once again, running a 3:49.09@ time. Malone led things off, followed by senior Bria Edwards who handed off nicely to Taylor. Taylor maintained the lead that Edwards gave her before freshman Clarissa Maxey did her part to cross the finish line and secure the victory. That mark is currently second-best in the conference.

The Lumberjacks compete in their fifth and final meet before conference championships when they host the NAU Tune-Up next Friday, Feb. 19. The tune-up is a one day meet scheduled to start at 3 p.m. MT in the Walkup Skydome.
