Box Score FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Four players scored in double digits for Northern Arizona, as the Lumberjacks picked up their first Big Sky home win of the season, 72-70 over Idaho. The Lumberjacks led by two points at the half and made six three-pointers in the second period to earn the victory over the Vandals.
"I'm really proud of the team and how they battled," said head coach Jack Murphy. "We did just enough to win and it's good to come out on top. A lot of our big guys got into foul trouble, so to see the guards attack the basket and the team as a whole come together is great."
The Vandals (14-10, 6-5 BSC) crashed the boards and they crashed the boards hard versus the Lumberjacks, beating NAU under the basket 46 to 29. What the Vandals didn't do well was take care of the ball. NAU (4-18, 2-9 BSC) forced 17 turnovers taking Idaho out of a rhythm.
In the first half, both teams connected on 10 field goals, but it was NAU's five made five three-pointers that made the difference.
Going from the first to the second half, NAU remained calm while also being effective. The Lumberjack big men were in and out of the game due to foul trouble, but the guards did not shy away from stepping up to the plate. Between Kris Yanku (17), Mike Green (17), Marcus DeBerry (14) and Torry Johnson (11), NAU spread the ball well and when you have that many weapons on the court, your defense has to come up big to stop them.
The Vandals defense tried and the visitors were inching their way back in the game. Although they did manage to cut it close, NAU walked away with the victory as the teams split the season series 1-1.
Nate Sherwood notched a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for Idaho. Arkadiy Mkrtychyan led the Vandals with 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Ty Egbert (11) and Chris Sarbaugh (10) chipped in to help lead the Idaho offense, as the Vandals fell for the third straight time in the Walkup Skydome.
