NAU Women's Tennis Picks up Third Win Over Seattle University

PULLMAN, Wash. – Northern Arizona University women's tennis wrapped up its three-match stand at Washington State University this evening, Feb. 6. The Lumberjacks finished with two wins and one loss to undefeated Washington State who is now 8-0 on the year. Coming off an exciting win over the defending Big Sky Champions University of Idaho, NAU responded by adding another digit to the win column after taking down Seattle University 4-1.

"We got better in our match against Seattle," Head Coach Kim Bruno said. "We stepped up in doubles on courts two and three where we needed to, and honestly, we played at an even higher level than we did against Idaho."

This afternoon's victory over Seattle began with winning the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. Marta Lewandowska and Hailey Rochin snagged the first win for NAU at number two doubles while Sara Brown and Jordan Denesik were able to finish it out with a 6-2 victory themselves on court three.

On the singles end, Lewandowska, Rochin and Blanka Szavay all picked up victories with Szavay clinching the match over Seattle's Kelli Woodman 6-4, 6-4. Impressively enough, all three Lumberjacks took down their respective opponents in straight sets.

After a brief intermission, NAU faced a tough Washington State squad and dropped that match 7-0. Despite the loss, every Lumberjack saw action today. Northern Arizona's depth, and players gaining valuable experience at that, will continue to reap rewards as the season progresses.

"Washington State played phenomenal against us," Bruno said. "They are a great team, but there is always something you can take away from matches like that. Now we move forward into another big conference match tomorrow."

Northern Arizona is now 3-2 on the year with another Big Sky matchup on deck. Bruno and the 'Jacks will take on the Eagles of Eastern Washington tomorrow at 4 p.m. MST.
