NAU's Weitz Earns Conference Honors After Weekend Performance

OGDEN, Utah – Another week, another Big Sky honor for a member of the Northern Arizona University track and field team. Earlier today, the conference office recognized Lumberjack senior distance athlete Nathan Weitz as the male track athlete of the week for his conference-qualifying performance in the mile event at the New Mexico Classic last Saturday.

Weitz was the lone Lumberjack competing this weekend and represented the team in a big way. His time of 4:00.17 after converting for altitude was good enough for a first-place victory and the second-best mile mark in the Big Sky this season. Currently, teammates Futsum Zienasellassie and Cory Glines sandwich Weitz at No. 1 and No. 3 in the conference mile rankings, respectively. Weitz's time is also the 25th-best in the nation as of today.

This is the second time in Weitz's collegiate career he has been named the conference's A.O.T.W., with the first time coming in the spring of his freshman season. Weitz is now the fourth NAU athlete to receive indoor A.O.T.W. honors in 2016.

With his performance this weekend, Weitz is the 19th NAU athlete that has qualified for indoor conference later this month. The Lumberjacks will have the opportunity to add more athletes to the mix this weekend when they host the NAU Invite Friday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 13.
