NAU Men's Tennis Set to Face Another Ranked Foe in No. 63 New Mexico

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University men's tennis team is coming off a solid victory over Eastern Washington University and will be back in action on Monday, March 14 at No. 63 University of New Mexico. The Lumberjacks are 5-8 this season and their win over EWU marked their second Big Sky victory in 2016. The freshmen class continues to pace NAU as they account for 15 of NAU's 28 singles victories this season primarily behind Tim Handel (6-7) and Lucas Taylor (7-5).
Highlight Reel
- Taylor holds a team-best 7-2 record at No. 2 singles while Handel is 6-7 on court one.
- Freshman Thomas Fisher picked up his first two career wins over Idaho and Eastern Washington on March 5 and March 6.
- Doubles duo Taylor and Eden Peleg are currently undefeated (5-0) at No. 2 doubles.
- Taylor posted one of his best weekends at the University of Arizona. He helped NAU secure the doubles point alongside Felix Schumann and also took down Harry Busby in straight sets to tie up the match 2-2.
- Handel and Ruben Montano picked up their first doubles win of the year against Utah's Egbert Weverink and Santiago Sierra 7-6(7) on Jan. 30. They are 4-5 this season on court one.

The No. 63 Lobos are 8-10 overall but remain undefeated at 5-0 on their home turf. A member of the Mountain West Conference, UNM has won its last four matches over DePaul University, Utah, Brigham Young and Air Force. Sophomore Bart Van Leijsen leads the way in the win column at 7-7 on court two. Leijsen alongside junior Hayden Sabatka in doubles play are currently ranked No. 17 in the country as they are 4-6 overall on court one. Sabatka by himself is also 6-10 overall this season and 4-9 at line one.
On Deck
The 'Jacks have two more Big Sky matches ahead against following UNM. They will face Idaho State on Saturday, March 19 and Weber State on Sunday, March 20.
Fall Rewind
This fall, NAU competed in a total of five tournaments at the University of Arizona, University of New Mexico, ITA Mountain Regionals in Albuquerque, N.M., University of Nevada, Las Vegas and concluded the fall season at Grand Canyon University.
Eight Lumberjacks saw preseason action as Handel led the way with a winning record in singles play and a 6-5 finish in doubles alongside sophomore Felix Schumann. At the UNM Balloon Fiesta Invitational, sophomore Eden Peleg and freshman Lucas Taylor claimed the consolation crown after winning three straight matches. Among the biggest of highlights was Handel's performance at ITA Regionals, taking down the No. 9 seed to advance to the Round of 16.
