NAU Men's Tennis Pulls Out a Strong 5-2 Win at Idaho State

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Northern Arizona University men's tennis team captured its third Big Sky victory over Idaho State this afternoon with a final score of 5-2. The Lumberjacks, now 6-9 overall and 3-2 in conference matches, look to carry this momentum into tomorrow's (March 20) match versus current league-leader Weber State University.

"It was a tough match against a good Idaho State team," Head Coach Ki Kroll said. "I'm happy with this one and how well we competed. Our No. 2 doubles team pulled out a nice win, which gave us a lot of momentum going into singles."

Doubles pair Jackson Lee and Felix Schumann got the afternoon started with a win on court three taking down Idaho State's Francis Filipovich and Haseeb Khan 6-1. After Tim Handel and Ruben Handel fell on court one, it came down to Lucas Taylor and Adi Zilberstein to clinch the doubles point. The tandem did just that in a close 7-5 victory over William Edin and Josh Goodwin. Zilberstein/Taylor advance to 2-2 this season, while Lee/Schumann are now 6-2 overall and 3-1 against Big Sky opponents.

These strong doubles performances helped propel the Lumberjacks into even stronger singles play as NAU dropped just two solo matches. Freshmen Lucas Taylor and Tim Handel, along with Felix Schumann and Jackson Lee, all picked up wins over the Bengals. Taylor and Felix were the first to do so on courts two and three respectively- putting Northern Arizona up 3-0. Taylor is now 8-3 at line two for the Lumberjacks this season and Schumann is 3-2 on court two and nearing .500 overall at 6-7.

Closing out the match with singles wins was Handel on court one and Lee on court five. Both Lumberjacks won in straight sets, starting with Handel's convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory over Idaho State's Sebastian Edin. Lee took down Josh Goodwin 6-4, 6-0 to capture his third victory of the season. Handel improves to 7-8 overall in his rookie campaign.

It will be a quick turnaround for the 'Jacks as they take on Weber State tomorrow, March 20 in Ogden, Utah. The Wildcats are 4-6 a perfect 3-0 in Big Sky play. Match time is set for 9 a.m. MST.
