NAU Women's Tennis Makes it Three Straight With 4-0 Win over UAB

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team has now won six of its last seven matches after today's 4-0 victory over the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Head Coach Kim Bruno and the Lumberjacks are now 10-6 overall with two more Big Sky Matches ahead of them on Thursday, March 24 and Saturday, March 26 versus Sacramento State and University of Montana.

"This was just a gritty win," Bruno said. "I have to be impressed with how our team played today and it was just what we needed going into two more conference matches this week. The girls continue to get better with each match. We want to peak at the end of the season and we are on the road to do that."

Doubles pair Hanneke Lodewijks and Blanka Szavay continue to make a splash at No. 1 doubles for the 'Jacks. The two took down Pardis Kianoush and Elaine Simon 6-4 to clinch the doubles point. It was freshman Eirene Granville and junior Hailey Rochin who garnered the first doubles victory at line two. In their first time being paired together this season, they took down Sophie Dodds and Reghan Lynch in convincing fashion with a final score of 6-2.

The Blazers hung around tough in singles play, but Northern Arizona picked up three wins on courts two, five and six to seal the match 4-0. Senior Jordan Denesik was the first to do so on court five against UAB's Lynch. Denesik breezed by her in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 right before Szavay also beat her opponent Elaine Simon in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-4. Granville captured NAU's match-winning point in a competitive showing versus Amy Lowther. The freshman topped Lowther 7-5, 7-5 for her seventh career solo victory.

With eight more regular season matches to be played before the Big Sky Conference tournament, four Lumberjacks having winning singles records. After this afternoon, Denesik improves to 9-6, Granville improves to 7-4, Szavay improves to 8-7 and Marta Lewandowska improves to 7-5.  In doubles, Szavay/Lodewijks lead the way at 8-4 overall.
