Two Sweeps on the Day for NAU Men's Tennis
/ March 26, 2016
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – In today's (March 26) home double header versus the University of North Dakota and Arizona Christian University, the Northern Arizona University men's tennis team pulled out two wins to improve to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in the Big Sky. The Lumberjacks started the morning off with a sweep over North Dakota and ended the day with a sweep over Arizona Christian. Head Coach Ki Kroll and his squad seem to be finding their groove at the right time heading into the final five matches of the regular season.
"I thought everybody's energy was up today," Head Coach Ki Kroll said. "I was really happy about that because it's always challenging to play two matches in one day. Everybody stepped up and did what they were supposed to do, so I'm really pleased with our performance."
The Lumberjacks set the tone right out of the gates in doubles play against the Fighting Hawks. Felix Schumann and Jackson Lee were the first to win on court three as the duo defeated Joe Lee and Eshan Varma 6-1. Tim Handel and Eden Peleg, paired for the first time together this season on court one, added a digit to the win column after topping David Bergstrom and Travis Lau 6-3. This secured the doubles point to give the 'Jacks an early lead that they would hold on to in convincing fashion.
Northern Arizona went undefeated in singles action against North Dakota to complete the sweep. Taylor took down North Dakota's David Bergstrom, hardly dropping a single point, with a final score of 6-1, 6-0 to start things off. Handel, Ruben Montano and Schumann all took down their opponents in straight sets as well to give NAU a 5-0 lead.
On court five, it was a Lee showdown between NAU's Lee and UND's Joe Lee. Jackson Lee dropped the first set, but bounced back in the second, 6-0, and won the tiebreaker 10-4. It was Peleg who rounded out NAU's 7-0 finish, and the sophomore surely worked for every point on court four. He also dropped the first set, but came out swinging in the final two. Peleg went on to win 5-7, 6-2, 11-9.
Against Arizona Christian, the 'Jacks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead yet again with doubles wins from Schumann/Lee on court three and Lucas Taylor/Adi Zilberstein on court two. After today, Lee and Schumann improve to 9-2 in the 2016 campaign and 5-1 versus Big Sky opponents. Zilberstein and Taylor are now 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Sky. Northern Arizona dominated on the singles end, too, as every Lumberjack won in straight sets on courts one through six to capture the sweep.
Up next for Northern Arizona will be Sacramento State and Northern Colorado. The 'Jacks will host the Hornets on April 2 and the Bears on April 3 in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex. Both matches are set to begin at 10 a.m.
