Lodewijks/Szavay Pull Off No. 1 Doubles Upset in NAU Women's Tennis' Loss at No. 19 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team traveled south to face No. 19 Arizona State University this afternoon, March 28, and fell by a final score of 4-0. Despite the loss, doubles tandem Hanneke Lodewijks and Blanka Szavay upset No. 22 Ebony Panoho and Alexandra Osborne on court one marking their first win over a ranked opponent in the spring campaign.

"Hanneke [Lodewijks] and Blanka [Szavay] are an outstanding doubles team," Head Coach Kim Bruno said. "I really think they can beat anyone in the country if they are playing well. It was a great start for us in doubles for sure."

Today's upset victory for Szavay and Lodewijks marks three straight wins and their tenth of the season to just four losses. They were the first to finish, positioning NAU for the doubles point, but the 'Jacks fell short on courts two and three. ASU's Kassidy Jump and Sammi Hampton made it 11 straight wins over Jordan Denesik and Marta Lewandowska. Jump and Hampton were ranked as high as No. 54 earlier this season.

In singles play, the Sun Devils were able to rattle off three straight wins starting on court two. No. 66 Kassidy Jump beat Szavay in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 before Hailey Rochin also fell in straight sets to Stephanie Vlad. Lodewijks certainly had her hands full on court one as well being matched with No. 24 Desirae Krawczyk, as Krawczyk would go on to win 6-0, 6-2. The remaining three matches went unfinished.

"In singles, I was hoping we could hang in there a little more," Bruno added. "We've been outfighting teams all year long and I was hoping to see more of that today. Arizona State had a little bit of a mental edge on us."

Northern Arizona is now 12-7 this season with five more regular season matches remaining before the Big Sky Conference Tournament April 29-May 1. Up next for the 'Jacks will be Idaho State, Utah State and Weber State the weekend of April 1-April 3.
