NAU Women's Tennis Continues Strong Play With 4-3 Win at Idaho State

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team pulled out yet another Big Sky victory on the road this afternoon over Idaho State University. With a final score of 4-3, the Lumberjacks add another digit to the win column to move to 13-7 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Bengals fall to 4-9 on the season and 2-4 in the Big Sky.

"We knew coming into this season that any Big Sky match would be tough," Head Coach Kim Bruno said. "We have to continue to play with more heart and more relentlessness than our opponents to pull out these wins- especially on the road where anything can happen. We fought and stuck with it today."

Northern Arizona jumped out to a great start in Pocatello after snagging the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Freshman Eirene Granville and junior Hailey Rochin were the first to finish at line two. The doubles pair defeated Svenja Tegtmeier and Laura Theus 6-3 before Marta Lewandowska and Jordan Denesik finished it off on court three. Lewandowska and Denesik took down Taylor Cole and Laura Guiterrez in a 6-4 decision.

In singles, Szavay, Denesik and Granville continued to take what was theirs. Szavay was the first to walk away with a solo victory on court two after ousting Tegtmeier in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-1. The Bengals were able to jump out to a 3-2 lead after Lodewijks dropped a hard-fought battle at No. 1 singles, but Denesik and Granville answered like they have all season long.

"Jordan [Denesik] and Eirene [Granville] came up big for us today," Bruno said. "They knew it was going to come down to them and they pulled it out for their team. They wear their hearts on their sleeves."

The two have dominated in Big Sky singles matches so far this season. Denesik is now a stellar 8-0 in conference (12-6 overall) while Granville is 6-0 and 10-4 overall. Today's win for the freshman was the fifth time she has clinched the match for NAU in the 2016 campaign.

The Lumberjacks have two more matches remaining this weekend. They will take on Utah State tomorrow, April 2 at 12:30 p.m. MST and second place Weber State on Sunday, April 3 at 9 a.m. MST.
