The Regular Season Crown Awaits NAU Women's Tennis In Final Conference Match at SUU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – This Saturday, April 23, might be the most heavily anticipated day of the year for the Northern Arizona University women's tennis team. With a 9-1 Big Sky Conference record – 16-7 overall – Head Coach Kim Bruno and the Lumberjacks have positioned themselves to make history in their final regular season match of the 2016 campaign. With a win over Southern Utah, NAU will bring home the Big Sky Conference regular season crown for the first time in school history.

Highlight Reel

  • Hanneke Lodewijks and Blanka Szavay were ranked as high as No. 81 in the country in doubles action in the April 5 ITA Rankings.
  • Lodewijks and Szavay captured their first win over a ranked opponent at No. 1 doubles on March 28 versus Arizona State's No. 22 Ebony Panoho and Alexandra Osborne.
  • Northern Arizona has had three different Big Sky Players of the Week- all underclassmen- in Lodewijks (two-time), Eirene Granville and Szavay (two-time).
  • The Lumberjacks captured their fifth win of the season over University of Wyoming on Feb. 27. The Cowgirls were ranked as high as No. 71 earlier this season.
  • Senior Jordan Denesik holds a team-best 15-6 record at No. 5 singles. Szavay is close behind at line two with an overall record of 14-8.
  • Denesik has yet to drop a singles match in the Big Sky. Denesik is a league-best 10-0 on court five.
  • Szavay and Granville have only dropped one conference match behind Denesik. Szavay is 9-1 on court two (seventh in the Big Sky) while Granville is 7-1 on court six.
  • On Feb. 5, the Lumberjacks defeated the defending Big Sky Champions University of Idaho, after losing to them at home last season, in a gutsy 4-3 finish.
  • As of Jan. 5, doubles pair Lodewijks/Szavay sit at No. 6 in the Mountain Region doubles rankings. They are currently 12-4 this season.

Southern Utah

Match day: Saturday, April 23

Match time: 9 a.m. MST

Match location: Cedar City, Utah

The Thunderbirds are coming off their second conference win, and third win overall, over the University of North Dakota on April 8. Southern Utah currently sits at 11th place in the Big Sky Standings and will have one final chance to compete on their home court when NAU comes to town. Playing No. 1 singles is senior Veronika Rogova, who was an All-Big Sky Honorable Mention Selection her sophomore year. Rogova is paired with sophomore Laura Martin Lozano in doubles action on court one.

On Deck

With no more regular season matches remaining, the Lumberjacks will head to the Big Sky Conference Tournament on April 28-May 1 in Gold River, Calif. With a win over the Thunderbirds, NAU will secure the No. 1 seed and have a first-round bye. In this instance, the 'Jacks would play on Saturday, April 30.

Fall Rewind

Northern Arizona competed in six fall tournaments over the span of two months at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, University of Arizona, ITA Mountain Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev., University of New Mexico, Grand Canyon University and Arizona State University. All 10 Lumberjacks saw action this fall, four finishing with a winning singles record in Denesik, junior Sara Brown, and freshmen Lodewijks and Granville.

In doubles play, Szavay and Lodewijks recorded an impressive 6-3 finish in doubles play. In their first appearance together, the duo upset No. 41 Ole Miss at the UNLV Fall Invitational in September. Granville also finished third in that same tournament. Juniors Marta Lewandowska and Hailey Rochin were also a force to be reckoned with on the doubles end. The pair finished with a 5-3 overall record.
