NAU Women's Tennis Remains in First Place After 5-2 Win Over Weber State

OGDEN, Utah – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team is on track to have one of the best seasons since Head Coach Kim Bruno's tenure began in 2006. With a 5-2 win over the second place Weber State Wildcats, the Lumberjacks improve to a stellar 15-7 record including an 8-1 mark in conference play. With a first place standing- and a regular season championship- on the line, Bruno's squad continues to step up when it matters most.

"With each match we play, the girls fight a little harder," Bruno said. "We're learning how to win those tough points and today everyone was outstanding.  It was a total team effort; the girls deserved to go 3-0 this weekend because we continue to get better and better."

The last time Northern Arizona reached 15 wins was in 2008. In 2013, the 'Jacks tallied 17 wins, which tied the second-highest single season win total in program history. With two regular season matches remaining as well as the Big Sky Conference Tournament, the Lumberjacks are bound to make history. With strong doubles and singles performances like today, a new milestone could very well be reached.

Doubles tandem Jordan Denesik and Marta Lewandowska rolled past WSU's Morgan Dickason and Dominique Beauvais, 6-2, to snag NAU's first of two doubles wins. Hanneke Lodewijks and Blanka Szavay won on court one to clinch the doubles point and win their fifth straight match. The two have racked up an impressive 12 wins this season to just four losses. Denesik and Lewandowska also improve to 7-2 on court three with a 3-1 clip versus Big Sky opponents.

On the singles end, Lewandowska, Lodewijks and Szavay rattled off three straight victories on courts three, one and two respectively. Lewandowska trumped Sara Parker with scores of 6-3, 6-3 to bump her season win total to double-digits at 10-7. Lodewijks topped Agata Bachanek 6-2, 6-2 to give NAU a 3-1 lead and position Szavay for the clinch. Szavay did just that- defeating Kristi Elmer 6-4, 6-1 at line two. In her first season for the 'Jacks, the sophomore is now 13-8 overall and 8-1 against Big Sky opponents.

Denesik captured the fifth point for Northern Arizona on court five where she continues to make a huge splash. The senior is surely making the most of her final season, as she remains undefeated in conference play at 9-0. She leads the 'Jacks in the win column with 14, to just six losses, and is currently on a seven-match winning streak.

Northern Arizona will be back in action on April 9 against the University of North Dakota. With a win over the Fighting Hawks at home, and a win on the road versus Southern Utah on April 23, the 'Jacks will likely have some hardware to show for an incredible stint in the 2016 regular season.
