NAU Women's Tennis Sweeps the Fighting Hawks in Final Home Match of 2016
/ April 09, 2016
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University women's tennis team swept the University of North Dakota in their final home match of the 2016 campaign. Head Coach Kim Bruno and the Lumberjacks are now 16-7 this year, which is just one win away from matching the second highest season win total in program history, and 9-1 in the Big Sky. Northern Arizona finished with a 6-1 record at home in the inaugural season in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex.
"We have wanted a 7-0 win since the beginning of the season," Bruno said. "Each individual had to step up and come together and that's exactly what we did today. We finished with a really good record in our home facility and I think that is something to build off of heading into the future. It's great to play at home- I think we figured out how to win here."
In doubles action, courts two and three shined for NAU. Marta Lewandowska and Jordan Denesik were the first to finish as they breezed past North Dakota's Mary Wessman and Aliza Deming, 6-0, to improve to improve to 8-2 on the year. Hailey Rochin and Eirene Granville later clinched the doubles point on court two after taking down Faith Lee and Preethi Kasilingam 6-1.
Denesik was the first of six Lumberjacks to pick up a win in singles play. The senior surely went out on a high note as she topped Wessman on court five to remain undefeated (10-0) in conference matches and 15-6 overall. Lodewijks and Granville followed suit on courts one and six respectively, each winning in straight sets as well. Granville jumps out to 11-5 overall (7-1 in the Big Sky) while Lodewijks improves to 9-9 overall (7-2 in the Big Sky).
Lewandowska, Szavay and Rochin rounded out the 7-0 sweep for NAU. Lewandowska captured her 11th win of the season as she ousted Lee in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Szavay, trailing Denesik by one in a team-best number of wins, is now 14-8 overall and an impressive 9-1 in conference matches. The sophomore defeated Mimi Yunker at line two 6-4, 6-4. Last but certainly not least was Rochin at No. 4 singles. The junior is back in the win column after taking down Kasilingam 6-4, 7-5.
Northern Arizona won't be back in action until April 23 at Southern Utah University. With a win over the Thunderbirds in Cedar City, NAU will be bringing home the 2016 Big Sky Conference regular season crown.
