FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The stars aligned on Monday night for the third annual Louie's Awards hosted by the Northern Arizona University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. During a fun night for all in attendance, student-athletes, coaches, staff and administration all gathered at the Prochnow Auditorium to look back and revel in yet another outstanding academic year.
The 2015-16 academic year is coming to a close with NAU capturing five conference championships this season courtesy of the volleyball (regular season and tournament champions), swimming & diving, men's indoor track & field and women's tennis teams. Individual and team school records were crushed and monument wins have been plentiful. Lumberjack student-athletes have excelled in the realm of competition once again, but also continue to do incredible work in the community and the Louie's was a night to celebrate all of these accomplishments.
The Voice of the Lumberjacks Mitch Strohman served as the night's master of ceremonies, hosting Monday's awards show after all attendees strutted in the glamour of the blue carpet upon arrival. As has become a tradition, each team produced a video that was shown throughout the awards.
Among the 20 awards handed out, football's Case Cookus was voted both the Male Athlete and Newcomer of the Year, while volleyball's Janae Vander Ploeg was named the Female Athlete of the Year. Alyssa Rader of the women's basketball team was selected as the Female Newcomer of the Year. The Lumberjack Award was handed out to Corbin Jountti of the football team and Chelsea Jackson of the swimming & diving team, while the volleyball team was the recipient of the Moment of the Year, Record Breaking Performance and Women's Team of the Year.
