LAS VEGAS - The Northern Arizona University golf team finished with its second-best tournament score of the season as it concluded UNLV's Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Tuesday morning at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club.
The Lumberjacks feel three spots to No. 15 in the overall standings after shooting an 19-over 307 for the final round. For the tournament, NAU sat at 34-over, totaling 898 total strokes.
"The wind picked up tremendously today which affected our scores quite a bit," Assistant Coach Langley Vannoy said. "The first two days, I was very proud of the girls. We saw a lot of really good play. A lot of girls stepped up who haven't been playing well early in the season, so overall there was a lot of good to take away."
"I would say for the most part we played ok," Head Coach Brad Bedortha said. "We had some people that showed some flashes of playing really well, highlighted by Sierra's first two rounds. For her, the final round was a bit of a struggle, but she played phenomenal the day before and I'm really proud of her. From where she came from to where she is now, with her mindset and her abilities she's really starting to get better and develop into the player she is and we know she can be."
Sierra Bezdicek and Sofia Anokhina led the way for Northern Arizona with six-over performances for the tournament. Both finished in a tie for 38th individually with 222 total strokes.
"Sofia really struggled the first two rounds, but on a really hard day today played great, so I was really happy with her," Bedortha said.
Kaitlyn Saum was right behind them with an 11-over 227 showing. She finished in a tie for 63rd.
Loren Skibba shot a 13-over 229 while Emma Reyes finished with a 22-over 238 (88rd). It was Skibba's best tournament score of the fall.
Lexi Keene and Carly Akine also competed, but did so as individuals. Skibba played her best round of the season in finishing with a 10-over 226 (T-59). Akine wrapped up with a 18-over 234 (T-82).
"Kaitlyn played well the first couples days, and had some struggles through the first nine today but really improved after that," Bedortha said. "Lexi had a really good tournament, made a couple birdies coming down the stretch, and for her to play like that was awesome. Loren also played really well today as well and played a really strong tournament. Overall it's great to see her getting back to where we know she can play at."
Host UNLV took home the tournament title, running away with it with a 17-under performance. San Jose State (-7), Missouri (-5), Idaho (-2) and Fresno State ( 4) rounded out the top five.
The Lumberjacks will be off for the rest of the fall and will return with UC Riverside's Battle at the Rock at Oak Quarry Golf Club on Feb. 12 to kick of its spring season.
"There is a lot of good this fall that we need to build off of and going into the off-season we just need to continue to work hard to get to the level that we need to be, with all of the girls playing to the best of their abilities," Vannoy concluded.
"We got a great group of girls, we love them to death," Bedortha said. "We just need to be a little more competitive. Today, a couple little things happened and we got a little flustered and it took a little while to get over that, and all of a sudden you get more behind that you should be and all of a sudden it's like oh shoot, we have to start playing better now, and they flip that switch and start playing better."
"At the end of the day, we put ourselves in harder tournaments this fall, so we knew it would be much harder to finish higher, but playing against these types of teams are only going to make us better for the spring," Bedortha added. "Hopefully we can just keep improving and keep becoming more competitive. We have the players that can do it, we just have to start doing it on a more consistent basis."
