NAU Athletics Celebrates 2017 Hall of Fame Induction Class

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Oct. 6, 2017) – Northern Arizona University celebrated the members of the 2017 Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Class on Friday evening at the Doubletree Hotel in Flagstaff.
The special event was attended by a large contingent of NAU alumni, former student athletes, current and former members of the athletic department as well as other supporters of the university as they joined to honor and remember the storied careers of the inductees, each of which will be forever honored among an exclusive group of athletes that personify what it is to be a Lumberjack.
The 2017 NAU Athletics Hall of Famers include former women's soccer player
Kristi Andreassen Guy (2007-10), football and track standout
Michael Haynes (1986-87), men's basketball player
Andrew Mavis (1996-98) and the
2003 NAU Football Team.
Special presenters for the inductees included former women's soccer player
Corie Bangle, former NAU track and field head coach Ron Mann, former NAU men's basketball and current Mississippi State head coach Ben Howland and current NAU football head coach
Jerome Souers.
Each of the inductees will forever be enshrined on the NAU Athletics Hall of Fame Wall located in the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome.
The Northern Arizona University Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1981 to honor those persons who have made outstanding contributions to NAU athletics.
Its purpose is to perpetuate the memory of those persons who have brought distinction, honor and excellence to Northern Arizona University while contributing to the welfare of their community, their profession or the university. Additionally, outstanding teams whose records of achievement have brought honor to the university and its programs shall be so honored by induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame.
Student-athletes, athletic teams and coaches become eligible for Hall of Fame induction five years after competing or serving at Northern Arizona University.
Highlights are below of each member of the 2017 NAU Hall of Fame Class:
Kristi Andreassen Guy – Women's Soccer (2007-10)
- 2010 ESPN Academic All-American of the Year
- Four-Time All-Big Sky and All-Academic Selection
- Helped lead the Lumberjack women's soccer team to the 2010 Big Sky Title
- Finished her career tied for first in most matches played by a student-athlete in NAU women's soccer history
Michael Haynes – Football and Track & Field (1986-87)
- 1987 All-America selection in football
- Led NAU in All-Purpose Yards in 1987 with 882
- Drafted in the seventh round by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1988 NFL Draft
- Played with Atlanta and New Orleans during 10-year NFL career
- Led the NFL in yards per reception with an average of 22.4 per catch in 1991
- Recorded the second-fastest times in both the 55-meter and 100-meter dash in NAU history
- His prowess on the track earned him an invite to the 1988 Olympic Trials
Andrew Mavis – Men's Basketball (1996-98)
- Honored as a first-team All-Big Sky selection each of two seasons on NAU men's hoops squad
- 1997-98 Big Sky Most Valuable Player in men's basketball and NAU Team MVP
- Member of 1998 NAU men's basketball team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history
- Finished his career as the program's all-time leader in made 3-point field goals – despite playing only two seasons
- Played professionally overseas and represented Canada in the 2000 Olympic Games
2003 Football Team
- Won the 2003 Big Sky Championship
- Upset No. 1 ranked McNeese State 35-3 on the road in the opening round of the 2003 NCAA Division I-AA Football Playoffs
- Head Coach Jerome Souers named as a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, which recognizes the top coach in NCAA Division I-AA (FCS)
- True freshman quarterback Jason Murrietta was honored as the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which honors the top player nationally in NCAA I-AA (FCS)
- Finished season ranked No. 10 in national polls
