FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Nov. 8, 2017) - Northern Arizona University's NCAA Graduation Success Rate of 85 is a one percent increase over a year ago and ranks second in the Big Sky Conference, according to a national report released Wednesday.
The NCAA developed the GSR for Division I institutions in 2002 in response to college and university presidents who wanted more accurate graduation data. NAU's rate is the second-highest among Arizona state institutions.
"Academics are always a priority for NAU Athletics and continuing our success in this important area is vital to our overall success," Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics
Dr. Lisa Campos said. "I am proud of our student-athletes for their hard work and dedication in the classroom. The results of the GSR are proof that a tremendous learning environment is provided by our coaches and administration and enjoyed by our student-athletes, who are receiving all of the tools they need to excel in the classroom."
Four teams posted a 100 percent graduation success rate for NAU, including women's tennis, which posted a perfect score for the fourth consecutive year. The NAU women's soccer program tabbed a perfect score for the third consecutive time, while the women's and men's basketball teams also registered 100 percent marks.
The Lumberjack men's basketball program was the only Big Sky men's basketball team to record a perfect total. In addition, the NAU women's swimming and diving squad also notched an impressive 95 percent GSR in the 2017 report.
"I'm pleased to see the success reflected in these graduation reports. I'm proud of our student-athletes, our faculty and the team in our Athletics Department who are also dedicated to winning in the classrooms," said NAU President Dr. Rita Cheng.
The latest Academic Progress Rate that was released in May showed that all 15 NAU sponsored sports continue to exceed NCAA academic standards for the eighth consecutive year.
NAU finished the 2016-17 academic year with a 3.12 overall cumulative grade point average. Fifty-nine student-athletes graduated last school year.
A total of 190 Northern Arizona University student-athletes were honored for their scholastic and athletic accomplishments at the 40th annual Golden Eagle Awards. The Golden Eagle Awards recognize NAU student-athletes who have made significant contributions to the Lumberjack athletics program while maintaining a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average.
