Tuesday May 16th. We started the day at 7 a.m., ate breakfast and headed to Segovia. Another tour guide named Emma met up with us before we got on the bus. It took us a little while to get there, but Emma kept us involved on the entire trip, telling us a little history about Spain and previewing what we would see in Segovia. The views from the bus were beautiful.
Once we left Madrid, there was quite a bit of countryside for us to see. The area is very green, and there are a lot of hills with beautiful houses built upon them. Closer to the end of the bus ride we passed by the Valley of the Fallen, a large monument atop a mountain and marked by a 500 foot tall cross. The sight was incredible.
Segovia had previously been a capital, and was where the Royal family once lived. Once we arrived, we toured the Alcázar de Segovia, a beautiful castle filled with history. There were large stained glass windows in every room, an armory, works of art, a throne room and so much more. The castle sat on top of a hill overlooking the city with the most breathtaking view.
After, we ventured through the city and went inside the Catedral de Segovia, which was absolutely stunning. The architecture inside was amazing. Emma explained different aspects of the cathedral to us. She told us the different rooms inside were bought by wealthy people of the past and used as tombs dedicated to their loved ones. Tombs also made up the floor of the cathedral, and each different tomb had a description written in the stones we walked on. A few places within were not allowed to be photographed or filmed. These contained many precious items; paintings, silver, and tapestries were a few of the treasures inside. Once we left the cathedral, we ate lunch and then walked through the city. There was an incredible aqueduct from the Roman Empire running through the city.
We then boarded the bus and then we were off to our first game of the week. NAU vs. CDE Olympic de Madrid. Our game started at 3:30 pm, and it went very well for us. We won 4-0, with goals scored by Anna Goebel (1), Madeline Waszak (2), and Tatum Heeres (1). After our win, we headed back to the hotel, showered up and rested before we headed to Plaza del Sol. There, we ate dinner and walked around a bit. Day 3 went perfectly for us, and we hope Day 4 treats us just as well, with another win against Rayo Vallecano.
Goodnight from Madrid,
