FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - With the start of the season just around the corner, the Northern Arizona University women's golf team has released its 2017-18 schedule.
In total the Lumberjacks will compete in eleven tournaments throughout the fall and spring seasons this year (including the Big Sky Championships), starting with the Ptarmigan Ram Classic Invitational hosted by Colorado State University, Sept. 17-19 in Fort Collins, CO.
NAU will then compete in the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational hosted by Gonzaga, Sept. 26-27 in Coeur d'Alene, ID. The two girls who do not compete in that event will still get their work in as they will head to the University of Denver's Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate event, Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Palm Desert, CA.
"Almost every one of these tournaments in the fall are a new event," head coach Brad Bedortha said. "We haven't played in the Colorado State tournament since I've been here. The Coeur d'Alene tournament is a brand new event as well.
"We really worked hard to try to upgrade our tournament schedule and get us in some better tournaments, better fields, and we got really lucky and got us some good events."
The Lumberjacks close out the fall portion of their schedule with the University of Denver's Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate, Oct. 6-8 and UNLV's Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, Oct. 22-24.
"The main hope was to get us in better tournaments and we definitely have that," Bedortha added. "The competition we are playing against is going to be really good this fall and I'm really excited about that."
After the winter break, Northern Arizona returns with the Battle at the Rock, hosted by UC-Riverside, February 12-13. The Lumberjacks then head to Las Vegas for UNLV's and Long Beach State's The Rebel - Beach event, Feb. 26-27.
Northern Arizona closes out the regular season with the Arizona Wildcat Invitational (March 5-6), its own Red Rocks Invitational (March 24-25 in Sedona, AZ) and the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic (April 2-3) in Maricopa, AZ.
"Overall, I'm really happy about our spring schedule as well," Bedortha said. "The spring one we get to drive to all of them; Riverside is a little bit of a drive, Las Vegas is close and everything else is pretty close to get to."
The team will then set its sights on the Big Sky Conference Championships, April 20-22 in Boulder City, NV, where it will look to improve on its fourth-place finish from a year ago.
"I'm really excited about the schedule," Bedortha concluded. "We really wanted to get in better fields and likely we were able to do that. Our strength of schedule is going to go way up this year."
