NAU Kicks Off Season with Day One of the Ptarmigan Classic

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Northern Arizona University women's golf team got its season underway with the opening day of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, hosted by Colorado State University at the Ptarmigan Country Club on Sunday.
After one day of competition, NAU sits in 13th, shooting a total score of 304 for a +16Â on the par-72 course.
Kaitlyn Saum finished atop the leaderboard for the Lumberjacks, shooting a round of -1 to finish in a tie for seventh-place overall for the tournament. Saum was steady throughout the day, earning pars on 15 holes (including a stretch of 11 straight) to go with two birdies and a bogey.
Sofia Anokhina was second for Northern Arizona with a +4 (T-53rd) and led the team with four birdies. Carly Akine was right behind her with a score of +5 (T-57th) while Lexi Keene finished with a round of +8 and Sierra Bezdicek played to a +9.
UC Irvine finished the day in the top spot with a team score of -3. Indiana (-1), the University of San Francisco (+1), San Jose State (+2) and Wyoming (+3) rounded out the top five.
The Lumberjacks will be right back in action Monday morning as they tee off day two of the tournament at 8 a.m. MST.
