Women's Golf / September 19, 2017
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Northern Arizona University women's golf team finished in 12th place overall with the conclusion of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, hosted by Colorado State University at Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colorado Tuesday afternoon.
NAU dropped one spot in the team standings from the day before after shooting a 303 on Tuesday for a +15 on the par-72 course. The Lumberjacks finished the three-day tournament with a team score of +40 overall (904 total strokes).
"For the most part, every girl had one really good round and the other two rounds didn't match up to their ability," Head Coach Brad Bedortha said. "If we can get three rounds out of each girl, we will be able to compete at a higher level. We saw glimpses of great play but overall, we had too many big numbers."
"If we can eliminate the mental mistakes after a poor shot, that's what will help with consistency," Graduate Assistant Langley Vannoy added. "To get ready for the next tournament each girl has to individually work on a few things that they need to improve. This is the first tournament of the season, so it was good to get the rust off, and we hope we will only move up from here."
Kaitlyn Saum sat atop the leaderboard for the Lumberjacks throughout the tournament, and finished in a tie for 17th with a score of +4.
Sofia Anokhina finished right behind her in a tie for 24th with a final tally of +5 for the classic. She finished with an even par on Tuesday, and led NAU with 11 birdies for the tournament.
Carly Akine finished in third individually for the Lumberjacks with a final score of +17 (T-67th). Lexi Keene was right behind and finished the tournament with a score of +21 (76th overall) in her first competition with the program.
Sierra Bezdicek rounded things out for NAU with a +24 (78th). Her best day came on the final day of the tourney, shooting a +3 (75) Tuesday afternoon to close things out.
New Mexico State went on a final day charge to win the tournament's championship, shooting -10 on the last day of competition to improve to -8 overall. San Jose State (-6) finished in second place while San Francisco (+8) and Colorado State (+8) tied for third. Long Beach State (+14) rounded out the competition's top five.
Northern Arizona will be back on the links with the Coeur D'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Gonzaga University Sept. 26-27 in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho.
