Anokhina Ties for Fourth as NAU Wraps Up Coeur D’Alene Collegiate Invitational
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Northern Arizona University's Sofia Anokhina finished in a tie for fourth-place individually with a tournament score of three-under as the Lumberjacks completed the final day of the Coeur D'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Gonzaga University at the Coeur D'Alene Resort in Idaho on Tuesday.

As a team, NAU finished the 54-hole, two-day competition in 14th with a score of 36-over. The Lumberjacks shot an 11-over as a squad during the final round on Tuesday morning.

"We definitely saw some better things out of our players [than the previous tournament]," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. ""We're seeing some better competition. Some girls are playing better and that's definitely a good sign."

Anokhina sat at two-over after the opening round, but the junior shot a five-under over the final 36 holes, including a four-under, 67 during the second round to climb from 51st all the way to No. 4 by the time the tournament was over. She led NAU with 11 birdies which included nine over the final two rounds of play.

"Sofia played great," Bedortha said. "She had a great second round yesterday and played really well today. She's back to her solid usual self after last spring and it's just really enjoyable watching her play and compete at that level."

Sierra Bezdicek came in second individually for the Lumberjacks, and finished it a tie for 40th overall with a score of eight-over for the tournament. Kaitlyn Saum finished it a tie for 51st with a ten-over performance.

"Sierra bounced back after the last tournament, the first few days were really rough but she had a good final day there and then played three really good rounds here," Bedortha said. "It shows you that she has those skills and hopefully that will continue to give her some confidence to keep working hard and competing to the best of her abilities."

"Kaitlyn didn't have her best game, but she's always a great competitor and kept competing really, really well and I was really proud of her for keeping a great attitude and that she keep working hard to post some good scores as well," Bedortha added.

Lexi Keene (26-over) and Carly Akine (27-over) rounded things out for the Lumberjack squad.

"I think that overall we had a great tournament," Graduate Assistant Langley Vannoy said. "The competition was against some of the toughest we've ever seen and we were able to improve each round so that was really exciting."

The two team members who did not compete in this week's event will head to the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Wyoming in Palm Desert, CA this Saturday and Sunday. The Lumberjacks will be back to their usual five-women team with the University of Denver's Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate, Oct. 6-8.

"The girls worked really hard this week against top competition and I think their performances let the team know that they are part of this top level of golf and can play with any team," Vannoy said. "We just have to keep working and we're going to get to that level soon."
