FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — For the first time this season, the Northern Arizona women's soccer team recorded 114 minutes of soccer in a double-overtime 2-1 loss to UNLV. After going scoreless in the first half and being down 1-0 for most of the second, the Lumberjacks came back with just 35 seconds left of regulation to push the game into overtime where UNLV was able to put one in the back of the net for their sixth win of the season.
"We battled hard in the second half and we pushed the tempo and increased the numbers going forward in the last 15 minutes of the second half," Head Coach
Andre Luciano said. "Our team showed a lot of grit scoring in the last 35 seconds and continuing on in double overtime."
The Rebels came out strong, putting the pressure on the Lumberjacks early, but the game remained scoreless in the first half. Coming out into the second, UNLV kept the pressure up with an early goal off of a deflection and cross. The Rebels remained in the lead until the 89
th minute when senior forward
Adrian Nixt headed a cross in from junior
Madeline Waszak for her first goal of the season.
These two strong offensive teams were heading into overtime for the first time this season for the Lumberjacks and second for the Rebels.
Defensively, the Lumberjacks remained solid in the back. Dickmann recorded a career-high 10 saves to keep the 'Jacks in play; however, it wasn't enough tonight against a tough front line.
"She did a great job," Luciano said. "Meghan came out with 10 saves, she is a good goalkeeper, she's a senior and she is a leader back there."
The game-winning goal came in the 106
th minute off of a brilliant save by Dickmann that was deflected into the feet of the Rebels for an open shot on goal.
Luciano and the Lumberjacks will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 10 in a rare 5 p.m. kickoff against the University of Pacific Tigers.
