FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 3, 2018) – With Morgan Gappmayer, a 6-0 outside hitter, signing her National Letter of Intent in November, the Northern Arizona volleyball team addressed another depth issue on the outside.
"Morgan is one of the most athletic players we've been able to attract here," said head coach
Ken Murphy. "Her ceiling is very high and she's got potential to be a very high impact outside hitter."
Gappmayer, out of Oro Valley, Ariz., played her final three prep seasons at Ironwood Ridge High School where she was a part of three consecutive state championship qualifying teams. Last fall, Gappmayer and Ironwood Ridge advanced to the 5A State Quarterfinals.
Gappmayer averaged 4.0 kills per set in her senior season, garnering her 5A Southern All-Region First Team accolades. In the back row, she averaged just shy of two digs per set, totaling 70 digs.
"Late in high school, she started to grow," Murphy said. "She was able to use her jumping ability and her speed and that helped turn into a really good player."
Her All-Region First Team nod was her second straight after picking up the honor as a junior. Last August, prior to her senior season, Gappmayer was named to the Under Armour Watch List. She was the only athlete from Southern Arizona to earn the honor.
