Northern Arizona Women’s Soccer Takes Down CSUN 2-0

Lumberjacks pick up first win of the season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (August 19, 2018) – Senior Victoria Cooper and freshman Sam Larberg each scored goals and junior Carly George had a pair of assists as the Northern Arizona women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season by a 2-0 margin at CSU Northridge on Sunday afternoon.

The victory evens the Lumberjacks record at 1-1-0, while CSUN slips to 0-1-1 overall.

"The team had a strong willingness to compete today, as they decided to go up and match them (Matadors) one-on-one," said NAU head coach Andre Luciano.

The Lumberjacks' offense posted a total of eight shots in the match, with four on target, after being limited to just a single shot on net in Friday's season opener.  Defensively, NAU was stout as it limited the Matadors to just one shot on goal and five overall en route to the victory.

The Lumberjacks first goal came in the 25th minute as Cooper put the ball past CSUN goalkeeper Taylor Thames off of a corner kick rebound.  Both Tatum Heeres and George picked up an assist on the score.

The 'Jacks put up their second goal of the game in the 69th minute, by way of a counterattack by Larberg.  George picked up her second assist of the game with a nice cross.
"It was good to see us be able to score two different ways, that being by corner and a counter-attack," said Luciano.

NAU sophomore goalkeeper Taryn Benham was able to pick the win while recording her first shutout of the season.  She had one save which came in the 41st minute of action.

The Lumberjacks will open the home portion of the regular season schedule on Friday, August 24 against New Mexico State in a 7 p.m. MST kickoff at Lumberjack Stadium.
