Flagstaff, Ariz. (September 7, 2018) – The Northern Arizona women's soccer team fell to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas 2-0 on Friday night as UNLV's offense was too much for it to handle.
The Lumberjacks now fall to 3-2-1 on the season after the loss. This marks the first loss for NAU since the opening game of the season against Portland – a stretch of four consecutive games without a loss.
The Rebels came out aggressive against NAU, as they were able to put a goal on the scoreboard in the 13
th minute on a one-on-one breakaway by Caitlyn Kreutz. Northern Arizona was able to show some offensive promise as it had two shots on goal in the back end of the half by
Mei-Te Coco and
Ana Rivera. Although allowing a score,
Taryn Benham was able to come up with three saves in the half.
"Once we decided to apply a little more pressure and have a little more urgency with our play going forward the game evened out," NAU women's soccer head coach
Andre Luciano Said.
UNLV started the second half strong and scored its second goal of the night on a header by Katie Ballou in the 46
th minute. NAU's offense was able to keep applying pressure, but was unable to break through for a goal. The Lumberjacks were outshot 8-6 in the loss. This marks the fifth game of the season where the 'Jacks allowed less than nine shots on goal.
"It was a hard fought physical game with two teams that were good, they were just a little bit better today," Luciano said.
