FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (November 20, 2019) – Less than a week after earning her third consecutive Academic All-District 8 honor, Northern Arizona volleyball senior
Abby Stomp was one of 28 graduating seniors to receive the Gold Axe Award Tuesday night in a ceremony held on campus.
The Gold Axe Award has been a symbol of recognition at Northern Arizona University, a tradition that dates back to 1933 – a year after the student body adopted the axe as the symbol for university's athletics. Each semester, a select group of graduating seniors are presented with the award based on their outstanding achievements and distinguished service to NAU and the greater community.
Stomp is NAU Athletics' 55th Gold Axe recipient since 2004. In addition to cementing herself among the program's all-time great setters – ranking seventh with 2,446 career assists – Stomp has achieved academic perfection.
A biology major and chemistry minor, Stomp holds a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average. She has took part in numerous service events including volunteering at the Flagstaff Family Food Center, Sunshine Rescue Mission and Toys for Tots.
The Albuquerque, N.M. native is up for Academic All-America honors after being named to the Academic All-District 8 First Team for the third straight year last week. She is also a three-time NAU Golden Eagle Scholar-Athlete award recipient and two-time Big Sky All-Academic selection.
