FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (November 9, 2019) – Northern Arizona University swimming notched its third win this season, outscoring the Idaho Vandals, 172-120.
"We had some great energy and some nice aggressiveness at the front half of our races," head coach
Andy Johns said. "They swam with confidence and we're on a great path."
Northern Arizona posted first place wins in all events but the 500 free, where Idaho's Brianna Lucien came in half a second faster at 5:12.22 than NAU's
Astrid Villeda (5:12.70). Villeda, however, did find a win in the 1000 free with a time of 10:39.07, beating Lucien by almost four whole seconds (10:42.53).
Two Lumberjacks earned two victories:
Maddie Seidl and
Elisa Rodriguez. Seidl crushed the 200 butterfly with an effort of 2:05.76. Her second win would come later in the 100 fly in a time of 58.31.
Rodriguez added wins five and six of the season after winning her events in the 50 and 100 free. She clocked a swim of 23.81 in the 50 and followed that up with a top time of 52.53 in the 100 free.
Seidl and Rodriguez brought the team effort in the relays, taking NAU to the top in the 200 medley.
Sarah O'Connor and
Hope Williams swam the first two strokes while Seidl and Rodriguez took the last two. The team achieved a two second win over UI's team (1:47.13), punching in at 1:45.20.
Miranda Nichols sprinted to victory in the 200 free, registering a 1:55.00 time. She found second behind Rodriguez in the 100 free and a time of 53.85.
Freshman
Lainie Bell achieved her first event win this year in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.55. Bell continued to do well for the Lumberjacks in both of the relays (200 medley and 200 free) helping to bring her team into third.
Sara Jendbro, freshman, also had her first event win so far this season in the 200 breaststroke timing in at 2:24.11, with
Haley Mayhew close behind at 2:24.25. Jendbro kept earning the Lumberjacks points, swimming the 200 individual medley at a 2:15.34 time to earn fourth, and was also a part of the relay team to place third in the 200 medley.
Jenny Cheetham continued her success, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter board for the second week in the row. Cheetham posted a winning tally of 303.60 on the 1-meter and 313.05 on the 3-meter.
Emily Sharrer was right behind her in second on the 1-meter, hitting a new high score of 287.40. Sharrer continued to score 283.28 in the 3-meter, placing third overall.
"Jenny does her thing," head diving coach and associate head coach
Nikki Huffman said. "She knows how to do strong dives and get up and down. Sharrer did a great job hitting some new dives."
The Lumberjacks will be back in two weeks for some more competition. The swimmers will head to Las Cruces, New Mexico to compete against New Mexico State University on Nov. 22 and 23 while the NAU hosts the two-day Lumberjack Diving Invite at the Wall Aquatic Center.
"We're really happy and proud of their efforts," Johns and Huffman agreed. "We keep getting better each day."
