BOZEMAN, Mont. (February 22, 2019) – Northern Arizona University's track & field program participated in the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships at Worthington Arena in Bozeman, Mont., today and was able to advance multiple athletes to the finals tomorrow in their respective event groups. The 'Jacks entered the weekend as two-time defending men's and women's team champions.
At the conclusion of the first day of competition NAU's men's team sits in first-place with 57.50 points, the women have accumulated 16 team points putting them in eighth-place.
While many of the events finals will not be until tomorrow NAU earned the gold in the women's distance medley and men's 5000m Run.
"We had both highlights and challenges on Day One," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Michael
Michael Smith "We are embracing the battles that we expect on Day Two. We are going to be competed to defend these championships through the end."
THROWS
NAU had two female throwers participate in the weight throw competition on Friday.
Alexa Dragone's best throw of the day was a 15.28m mark that she earned on her first toss of the evening. Dragone was joined by teammate
Sykora Walker who was able to set a new PR in the event after she threw for 17.29m, eclipsing her previous best mark of 17.20m set last week at the NAU Tune Up meet.
Parker Joens led the way for NAU in the men's shot put placing third on a mark of 17.38m. Joens would earn five points towards NAU's team score.
Jake Arnold set a new PR after he threw for 16.81m on his first throw in the men's shot put, beating his previous top mark of 16.39m set at Mountain T's earlier this season. Arnold contributed two points towards the Lumberjack men's team score.
William Beaudry shattered his previous PR of 15.53m after throwing for 15.69m on his second throw of the event.
JUMPS
The women's jumps team saw
Kaitlyn Wayne,
Jenna Figueroa and
Helena McLeod compete in the long jump competition. McLeod recorded a mark of 5.61m on her third jump, while Wayne was able to hit a distance of 5.30m on her final attempt as well.
The men's jumps squad played a big role in getting some solid points for the overall team score.
Obang Odol competed in the men's high jump competition recording a mark of 1.94m to earn an eighth-place finish and secure 0.5 points for NAU; Odol's team points would be the Lumberjacks first of the weekend.
Khalil Dorsey and
Cameron Rayford both participated in the men's long jump. Dorsey took fifth-place after hitting 7.31m on his last attempt in the preliminary round, which would earn NAU four team points. Rayford was also able to contribute in a big way after hitting a mark of 7.48m earning the 'Jacks five more points on a fourth-place performance.
"I was pleased with our men's jumps crew today," said head jumps coach
Matthew Harmeyer. "Anytime you can score points and help your team, you should be proud! These guys have showed glimpses of their potential leading up to this meet. The trajectory of both our men's and women's is positive and I'm extremely proud of their efforts."
SPRINTS/HURDLES
Jada Jackson led the way for the 'Jacks in the women's 60m Dash. Jackson placed second in the preliminary round with a time of 7.55 to advance to tomorrow's finals. Jackson will also make an appearance in tomorrow's 200m Dash finals after she recorded a time of 24.95 in that event's preliminary round today.
Jasmine Malone advanced to tomorrow's 400m Dash finals after recording a time of 57.93 in the preliminary round.
Khalil Dorsey had the top preliminary time in the men's 60m Hurdles after he posted a time of 7.95. The next closest finisher to Dorsey was Idaho State's Tanner Conner who crossed the line at 8.05. Dorsey will compete in the finals tomorrow.
Dorsey also raced in the 60m Dash preliminaries alongside teammate
Christopher Grant. In one of the most exciting events of the day both Dorsey and Grant finished in 6.71. That time earned both athletes a new PR in that event. They will be racing in the 60m Dash finals tomorrow.

Tyren Wolfe were both able to move on to tomorrow's finals in the men's 200m Dash. Grant dominated again as he ended the day with the top qualifying time of 21.93. Wolfe had the fifth best time of the day at 22.19.
DISTANCE
The 'Jacks women's distance medley team took home the gold after finishing the event in 11:47.64. The squad was comprised of
Maggie Carruth,
Hannah Behunin,
Delaney Rasmussen and Maxey. Their first-place performance was able to bring in 10 points towards the women's overall score.
Behunin and Carruth will both advance to the women's 800m Run finals after finishing fourth (2:13.59) and fifth (2:12.68) respectively in the preliminary round.
Pipi Eitel and
Miranda Myers were able to contribute to NAU's team score for their performances in the women's 5000m Run. Eitel earned four points for the 'Jacks off of a 17:31.97 finish, while Myers earned two for her 17:40.58 effort.
The men's distance crew dominated the 5000m Run placing seven 'Jacks in the top eight.
Luis Grijalva led the way with a 14:11.42 performance securing first-place and ten team points for NAU.
Tyler Day (2
nd, 14:25.14) and
Blaise Ferro (3
rd, 14:41.83) also made podium in the 5000m earning the Lumberjack men eight and six points.
Jack Shea was the next NAU man to cross the finish line at 14:47.27 to take fourth-place and earn NAU five points.
Harvey Nelson,
Ryan Raff and
Peter Lomong finished the race in sixth, seven and eighth-place. The trio was able to collectively earn NAU six team points.
Ryan Lanley placed first in the men's 800m preliminaries with a time of 1:54.86 to earn a spot in tomorrow's finals.
NAU's men's distance medley took bronze gaining the Lumberjack men six more team points. The squad consisted of
Brodey Hasty,
Geordie Beamish, Burks and Odol.
