TEMPE, Ariz. (March 15, 2019) – Northern Arizona University's track & field program participated in the first day of the 2019 Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State University at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz today.

NAU was able to get in some valuable competition early and get a feel for where the 'Jacks are at entering the bulk of the 2019 outdoor season.

THROWS
Â
The field of competition for the NAU men's throws squad was some of the best they will see all outdoor season. The 2019 NCAA indoor national champion in the weight throw and shot put competition, Payton Otterdahl of North Dakota State, was one of the student-athletes participating.

Arnold led the way for NAU in the shot put placing fifth-overall among collegiate athletes after hitting a mark of 16.71m. Teammate
Parker Joens (16.55m) placed sixth in that event as well.

Jacob Kaufman hit a mark of 58.04m to set a new PR in the men's hammer throw event; last season at Baldy Castillo he threw for a mark of 55.82m and placed 19
th. This year he placed fifth among collegiate athletes, showing a clear improvement since his last visit to Tempe.

In the discus 46m and under event despite throwing unattached,
CJ McMullen placed first with a mark of 45.66m in what was his first look at NCAA Division I collegiate competition.

The women's throws team saw
Paige Inman compete for NAU for the first time in outdoors in the hammer throw. On her third attempt she hit a mark of 42.55m setting a new PR.

SPRINTS/HURDLES
Â
Khalil Dorsey placed fourth in the men's 110 hurdles event with a time of 14.35. He would set a new PR in that event after topping his time of 14.43 set at last year's Baldy Castillo Invitational.

DISTANCE
Â
The women's distance crew was led by senior
Maggie Carruth in the 1500m run. She crossed the finish line at 4:29.69, earning her a third-place finish among collegiate participants.
Â
Mikayla Malaspina placed fifth among college participants in the women's 5000m run. Her time of 17:51.32 was four milliseconds ahead of teammate and fellow junior
Shannon Molvin (17:51.36).

The Lumberjack men were led by senior
Kyle Havriliak who placed first in the men's 1500m run event with a time of 3:53.29, just a stride ahead of teammate
Peter Lomong (3:53.38). Freshmen
Theo Quax and
Mitchell Small came in third and fourth-place with times of 3:53.88 and 3:54.70, respectively.

Quax had a huge kick during the last 200m of the men's 5000m run to take third-place among collegiate runners with a time of 14:44.90.
