40th Annual Sun Angel Classic: Day One Recap

SUN ANGEL CLASSIC RESULTS
 
TEMPE, Ariz. (April 5, 2019) – Northern Arizona University's track & field program participated in the first day of the 40th Annual Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State University at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday.
 
This is the second time this outdoor season that the 'Jacks are calling Tempe home for the weekend, having previously competed in the 2019 Baldy Castillo Invite in the middle of March.
 
The Lumberjacks were able to amass multiple new PR's in five events during day one.
 
One of the most impressive team performances of the day came in the form of the NAU women in the 3000m Steeplechase. Not only did Pipi Eitel take first place with a new PR, the 'Jacks were also able to take the top-four spots in that event.
 
The men's and women's throwers had a few PR's in the Hammer Throw, while Khalil Dorsey highlighted the Men's Long Jump event taking first-place.
 
Sprints/Hurdles
 
Christopher Grant earned a top-10 finish in the Men's 200m Dash coming in seventh-place among attached collegiate athletes at 21.81 (21.801).
 
Jasmine Malone participated in the Women's 200m Dash Premiere section and came in 10th-place among attached collegiate athletes at 24.45.
 
Throws
 
Both Paige Inman and Alexa Dragone were able to set new PR's today in the Women's Hammer Throw. Inman set a new top mark with a throw for 46.91m on her first attempt; Dragone was able to best her previous PR of 42.14m set at last year's Desert Heat Classic with a new mark of 43.80m earned on her third attempt.
 
The Lumberjack men had six of the seven student-athletes competing in the Men's Hammer Throw set new PR's. Kevin Cooney placed second with a mark of 57.91m. Brady Williams threw for a mark of 57.75m on his second attempt to beat his previous PR of 56.34m set at the 2019 Baldy Castillo Invitational earlier this season. John Murphy and William Beaudry each set new PR's with marks of 54.08m and 54.33m respectively. Like Cooney, Jake Arnold competed in the Hammer Throw reaching a mark of 50.82m.
 
Jacob Kaufman's new PR of 59.07m was set in the Premiere section of the Men's Hammer Throw. Kaufman's previous PR was a mark of 58.04m that was also set at the 2019 Baldy Castillo Invitational.
 
Jumps
 
Khalil Dorsey took home the gold in the Men's Long Jump competition. Dorsey reached a distance of 7.18m on his third attempt, ensuring that he would end the night in the top spot on the leaderboard.
 
Jenna Figueroa was able to set a new personal best in the Women's Long Jump after she leapt for a mark of 5.25m on her third attempt.
 
Distance
 
Eitel set a new personal best in the Women's 3000m Steeplechase with the top time of 10:48.96. That time would beat her previous PR of 10:52.48 set at last year's Sun Angel Classic. Close behind Eitel was Mikayla Malaspina and Jenna McCaffrey. Malaspina finished second with a time of 10:56.72; McCaffrey placed third with a time of 11:02.30. It was also Malaspina's and McCaffrey's first times competing attached to NAU in the 3000m Steeplechase.
 
On the men's side of things Kyle Havriliak led the way for the Lumberjacks in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase. Havriliak came in second-place among attached collegiate athletes crossing the finish line at 9:11.18.
 
Aldo Marquez also had a top three performance among collegiate participants in the Men's 5000m Run. Marquez finished in 14:32.68, shattering his previous PR of 15:17.68 set during this past indoor season at Big Sky Championships (Outdoor PR was 15:25.49, 2019 Baldy Castillo Invite).
 
Beau Prince would also set a new PR in the 5000m Run while coming in at seventh-place among collegiately attached athletes. Prince finished in 14:58.32, obliterating his previous PR of 15:27.89 set in mid-March at the Baldy Castillo Invite.
