NAU Volleyball’s Class of 2019 Q&A with Jasmine West

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 9, 2019) – Jasmine West, a defensive specialist/libero out of Temecula, Calif. is featured in the first of a four-part bi-weekly Q&A with each member of the Northern Arizona volleyball team's incoming freshman class of 2019.

Q: What is the one thing that excites you most about joining the NAU Volleyball program?

A: I'm really excited to compete with all of the girls on the team and to be coached by Coach Ken (Murphy). I'm excited to play at this high level of volleyball and represent NAU.

Q: How would you describe yourself as a volleyball player?

A: I'm really competitive. Even if we're playing mini games, I'm always trying to strategize and find ways to win.

Q: In your opinion, what makes a good player in the back row?

A: I think the ability to read hitters, go for everything and throw your body out is important. It's also important to have good discipline in the back row to make every play possible.

Q: You have a twin sister, who plays lacrosse. Did you ever dip into that sport?

A: Actually my sister played volleyball during her freshman year, but it didn't interest her. She wanted a sport that was a little more aggressive so she found lacrosse and fell in love with it.

Q: You are contemplating majoring in either elementary education or criminology & criminal justice. What interests you in both of those degree paths?

A: For elementary education, I really love being around kids at a younger age. For criminology, I'm taking classes in high school right now and solving mysteries and crimes is really interesting to me.

Q: What is one fun fact about yourself?

A: I love to be really organized. There are some things that I really need to clean or keep organized. If something is placed in the wrong spot, I have to move it.

What Head Coach Ken Murphy is saying: Coming in, she'll be a difference maker defensively. She has this ability to see the ball early, predict the play and dig the ball and extend a rally at a high level. She brings a lot of experience to us and she's been around our program for a couple of years (at camp). She's familiar with our style of play that we like from our libero and I think she'll fit in with us really fast.
