SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 23, 2019) - Tyler Day is headed to Austin for the 2019 NCAA National Championships after qualifying in the Men's 10,000m Run at the NCAA West Regional Preliminary Round at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento.
Day was able to secure his spot on the track in Austin this June with a 29:00.55 performance late Thursday evening. In a gritty and hard-fought race he was able to make his gold uniform top standout among the 48 runners who qualified for the 10,000m Run at West Regionals. Less than one second separated eight runners at the finish.
The senior's presence was felt the entire race, while being one of only two Lumberjacks in that event. He was joined by true freshman
Ryan Raff, who despite not qualifying, was one of only four freshman to be entered into the 10,000m Run.
Day will also be competing in the Men's 5000m Run on Saturday evening. He will have a bit more familiar company in that event as Brodey Hastey,
Geordie Beamish and
Luis Grijalva are also slated to participate in the 5000m Run.
Senior
Maggie Carruth had a successful showing too as she earned a place in the next round of the Women's 800m Run. Carruth posted a time of 2:07.59 to take second in her heat. That event looks to have a start time of 6:30 P.M. (MST) on Friday. Tomorrow's only event featuring an NAU student-athlete will be the Women's 800m Run with Carruth.
Along with Day, Raff and Carruth nine other Lumberjacks made appearances at the West Regionals on Thursday.
The day began with
Jacob Kaufman in the Men's Hammer Throw competition. Kaufman's mark was not enough to qualify him for Nationals, however the sophomore was able to gain valuable experience on a national level.
Parker Joens will give the 'Jacks throws crew another chance to make Nationals when he competes in the Men's Shot Put on Saturday.
Later in the afternoon
Cameron Rayford and
Helena McLeod both participated in their gender's long jump competitions. Neither was able to advance to Austin but like Kaufman gained valuable experience that will be sure to become useful later on in their collegiate careers.
Raff was not the only true freshman to represent the Blue & Gold on Thursday.
Theo Quax raced in the Men's 1500m Run with teammate
Cade Burks. Unfortunately neither of the two were able to advance to the next round, but Burks did set a new personal best in that event with a time of 3:47.74. Burks end to the 2019 outdoor season has been something for Lumberjack fans to truly enjoy and is a potential sign of great things to come for the junior.
On the women's side of the 1500m Run
Pipi Eitel and
Hannah Behunin were both entered in the first heat of that race. Eitel and Behunin did not qualify for the next round in that event.
Jasmine Malone raced in the Women's 400m Run but was also unable to qualify based off of her time. The Women's 10,000m Run saw
Miranda Myers lace up for NAU, however she did not qualify for Nationals either.
