SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (February 29, 2020) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis fell to the Utah Utes today, 1-6. The sole win came from
Daniel Dillon's single court match, where he won in a tiebreaker set.
"Our team has showed a lot of improvement this weekend and we gained more experience," head coach Maciej Boguz said. "Our players are making better decisions in a lot of situations on the court. We keep getting better every match we play."
In doubles play, the Lumberjacks were unable to win on any of the courts.
Alex Groves and
David Nguyen were the first court to fall, 1-6, against Utah's Slava Shainyan and Azat Hankuliyev.
Facundo Tumosa and
Eban Straker-Meads went 3-6 against the No. 54 doubles pair in the country, Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim to allow UU to clinch the doubles point.
Groves fell first on his courts to Shainyan, going 2-6 and 4-6 for the Utes to go up 0-2. Quickly after, the Utes won on four more courts. Straker-Meads fell, 2-6 and 3-6, followed by his duo pair, Tumosa, who went 3-6 and 5-7. Steele finished 1-6 and 3-6, while Nguyen lost 4-6 and 2-6.
Tripp's success on his singles court was over Wally Thayne, finishing 6-3 in the first set, 2-6 in the second and 10-5 in the tiebreaker to earn the 'Jacks their single point of the match.
The Lumberjacks will finish up their road game swing at Southern Utah next weekend on March 7. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
