FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (May 20, 2020) – Savannah Bloom, a middle blocker from Queen Creek High School, is featured in this week's Q&A with Northern Arizona volleyball's 2020 signing class.
Q: What is the one thing that excites you most about joining the NAU Volleyball program?
A: I'm excited to be part of an amazing group of girls and the coaching staff at NAU is unlike anything I've seen before. I'm super excited to get there and be shaped into the volleyball player I want to be.
Q: How would you describe yourself as a volleyball player?
A: I would describe myself as quick, determined and smart.
Q: Your dad was on the football and track & field teams at Idaho State. Will there be any friendly rivalries when you face the Bengals?
A: Not at all. My dad was all about (NAU). He came with me on my visit and he loved it so much. There is no rivalry; he loves NAU and he loves the coaches and he's super excited for me. It's been so fun because he played at the collegiate level so he knows what it's like so I can lean on him and learn from him a lot.
Q: So we learned that you admire Michael Jordan. With "The Last Dance" just finishing, what were your main takeaways?
A: What I admire the most about him is that he didn't even make the basketball team (in high school) when he started. That would be something so shattering because you work so hard. I was motivated by that because I've dealt with having to play up to some girls and I would be discouraged. But when I look at him, I know I can do anything I set my mind to and he's one of the greatest basketball players to ever live. It's amazing to see his example and to keep working as hard as he did.
Q: What interests you in pursuing a degree in business?
A: Both of my parents have run their own businesses so I've seen a lot behind the scenes. There's something about that I enjoy; I enjoy working with people and being a leader among things that go along with running a business. I can see myself being successful because I'm really determined and I'll work hard.
Q: How have you been filling your time during the COVID-19 pandemic?
A: At first it was really hard because I was devastated that I couldn't play volleyball anymore and I was worried about college, but I tried to stay as active as possible and spend time with family. That was huge for me because my family's schedules are busy all the time so we hardly have time to spend together. It was nice to have more time with family. I'm happy that things are picking up again.
Q: What is one fun fact about yourself?
A: I am a good singer and I like to sing. Not a lot of people know that. I like Taylor Swift a lot and any country music really.

What Head Coach Ken Murphy is saying: Savannah is a great fit for the culture of our program. She is a selfless teammate who plays with confidence and sets a high standard for herself. Athletically, Savannah is fast and dynamic with the ability to play high above the net and impact the game both defensively and offensively. She is learning the game at a fast rate right now and given her work ethic and dedication to improvement, I know she will continue to grow and impact the future of our program.
