FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (October 10, 2021) - Sam Larberg and Kylie Kapustka brought the Lumberjacks two goals in Sunday's win to the Idaho State Bengals, improving NAU's win streak against the Bengals to 11.
"After we loss to Idaho we had quite a major reset and credit to Chris and Alan because they implemented things that brought the team chemistry back, and at the end of the day the players want to win. They don't want to not play well, so we just needed to work on confidence and mentality and we did that," Head Coach Kylie Louw said.
A slow first half for both teams was highlighted by six shots on goal for NAU, holding Idaho State to none. The Bengals did not see their first shot on goal until the 85th minute of the match, where Deborah Pond sent the ball from just inside the box and Natalie Manzo came up with the save from the bottom center.
In goal for the Bengals was freshman McKayla Wetsel who played all ninety minutes for ISU, recording twelve saves and allowing two goals. Wetsel kept a tight lock on her goal throughout the match making six stops, and stopping Madison Montgomery's penalty kick just 45 seconds into the second half.
The Lumberjacks looked to create quicker opportunities after the halftime blank score, and they found their way by doing just that.
In the 63rd minute of the match, Rylee Mitchell created a chance setting up Sam Larberg who put a shot on goal saved by Wetsel. The ball went loose off the save, and Larberg quickly put a second chance shot in the back of the net, putting the Lumberjacks up by one.
Four minutes later, Madison Montgomery sent a long boot from just ahead of the midfield line to Kapustka for the Lumberjacks second goal of the match. Kapustka had no hesitation off the pass, lobbing the goal all the way to the top left corner of the net.
The Lumberjacks held the Bengals to two shots, one on goal throughout the match, making their best defensive game of the season and recording fourth shutout win.
"It was a great senior weekend, I know senior weekend is next weekend but all of our seniors contributed. The senior group as a whole has really contributed to our wins this weekend and they're stepping up and everybody's following their lead and I think it's a great job," Louw said.
The Lumberjacks are off Friday, and will be back on Sunday in Flagstaff for their last home game of the season. NAU will take on Southern Utah with a kick off time of 1 p.m. MST at Lumberjack Stadium, and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
