FLAGSTAFF, Ariz (October 15, 2021) - Following their three game win streak and two wins at home last weekend, the Lumberjacks will host the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on Sunday at 1 p.m. MST. Sundays match will be the teams last match at home, and will honor the seniors for the last time in Lumberjack Stadium.
The Lumberjacks come off an impressive weekend in the hunt, holding their opponents to just one goal and allowing only seven shots on goal. NAU scored a total of six goals, four on Friday night against the Weber State Wildcats, and two on Sunday against the Idaho State Bengals. Three goals came from senior Sam Larberg who earned herself Big Sky Offensive Athlete of the week.
Alongside Larberg, the Lumberjacks swept the conference accolades with junior Rylie Curran earning the Defensive Athlete of the week. Curran played a vital role in the best defensive weekend for NAU on the season.
Coming into Flagstaff Sunday, the Thunderbirds have not seen a win since their preseason matchup at Hope International University on Aug. 19. Southern Utah has struggled offensively, only recording seven goals throughout the season, while allowing 27. However the chances are there with an average of 10.6 shots on goal per match.
NAU holds a series record over Southern Utah of 16-2-2. The Lumberjacks are on a four game win streak against the Thunderbirds, bringing home two wins from their last two matches in Cedar City. Back in March the 'Jacks played two back to back matches at Southern Utah, winning both 3-2, 3-0. Madison Montgomery put up two goals in the first match, including the game-winner. Rylee Mitchell scored one in the second match to sweep SUU through the weekend.
