FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 18, 2021) – After starting off their season winning against Grand Canyon University 2-0, the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks are ready to hit the pitch this Saturday, Feb. 20, in Tucson, Ariz. against Arizona.
The Wildcats have posted a 3-0 win streak to start off their season, taking wins over GCU (4-1), UTEP (2-0), and New Mexico State (4-0). Just two weeks into the season and three matches in, Arizona has posted two shutouts and is averaging 3.33 goals with an attempted 14 shots per game.
Senior goalkeeper, Taryn Benham, and the Big Sky's Defensive Player of the Week back on Feb. 8, will have to look out for the Cats' leading goalscorer, Jill Aguilera. Aguilera spearheads the team with 4 goals, relaying a season high of two goals against UTEP on Feb. 7. In 2019, Aguilera broke all of her previous season records, earning a United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's All-Pacific Region Third Team honor at the end of the year.
With their first win of the season over Grand Canyon Feb. 7, the Lumberjacks had two different offensive players score to secure the win over the Lopes. Three minutes into the match, Abby Donathan put the ball in the back of the net to gain the advantage over GCU. Kayla Terhune, just eight minutes later, cemented NAU's win with their second goal of the afternoon.
While there were two separate scorers for the 'Jacks, Paige Maling assisted on both goals, helping NAU in setting up plays and keeping the offensive pressure on Grand Canyon.
Northern Arizona will kick off the match at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at Murphy Field at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. The facility is not allowing in-person spectators, but Arizona will be providing a live-stream on pac-12.com so fans are available to watch. This will be the final scheduled match before NAU begins conference play March 12 at home.
