NAU Men’s Tennis Ends 5-2 Loss Against VCU on a High Note

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 11, 2021) – NAU men's tennis wrapped up their day trip to Tempe, Ariz. with a 5-2 loss against the Virginia Commonwealth Rams.

The Rams advance to a 7-0 season while the Lumberjacks drop to 0-5. Despite the loss, Northern Arizona is now only one of two teams to score against VCU during the 2021 spring season.

Virginia Commonwealth University took the early advantage by winning the doubles point. The Rams were able to beat out the 'Jacks on courts two and three and held a close tally on court one.

Finishing first, Eban Straker-Meads and Marcus Sulen were bested by VCU's Mario Duron Lleyton Cronje for a quick 6-2 win for the Rams. Virginia Commonwealth's Inigo Torre Martin  and Rayane Stable would shortly finish their 6-3 win over NAU's Dominik Buzonics and Chris Steele

Entering 1-0 into singles, VCU would only need three singles wins to clinch the game. The Rams would earn the first two over Marcus Sulen (6-0, 6-3) and Straker-Meads (6-2, 6-2). However, hope remained as the Lumberjacks continued to push.

Winning his second singles match so far this spring season, Facundo Tumosa scored a point in favor of the Lumberjacks. In three sets, Tumosa defeated the Ram's Charles Bertimon 6-2, 3-6, and 6-4.

Although VCU would clinch the match after winning over Alex Groves (6-1, 6-1) and Buzonics, (6-4, 6-3), Maciej Ziomber found his first singles win of the season.

On court six, the freshman would finish the second set in a tiebreaker. Ziomber would secure the first set win 6-2 and the second 7-6 (5-0).

"We finished on a very high note with Maciej's and Facundo's wins," head coach Maciej Bogusz said. "We are getting closer to being ready for conference matches."

The Lumberjacks will look forward to traveling to Calif. next week for a pair of matches. On March 16, NAU will take on the University of San Francisco. The 'Jacks will begin conference play on March 18 with a matchup against Sacramento State.
