NAU Soccer Achieves Second Big Sky Victory Over Southern Utah, 3-2

CEDAR CITY, UTAH (March 19, 2021) – In today's match against Big Sky opponent, Southern Utah (1-1-1), Northern Arizona (3-1) women's soccer took the first match of the weekend series, 3-2.

The Lumberjacks and Thunderbirds will face one another once again on Sunday, March 21 in Cedar City, Utah at 11 a.m.

In the 25th minute, the Lumberjacks tallied the first goal of the match to gain the 1-0 advantage over the Thunderbirds. Madison Montgomery ran straight up the center of the field, pausing to set up the shot, and sent the ball to the back of the net against SUU's keeper, Jennifer Kovisto.

Montgomery previously achieved her first goal against Weber St. this past Sunday, earning NAU's 1-0 lead over the Wildcats with a similar attacking strategy as today.

The Lumberjacks kept the pressure on the T-Birds throughout the first 45 minutes of play, forcing Kovisto to make four saves in the first half. In the 'Jacks box, Taryn Benham only needed to make one save in the initial half.

In the final 45 minutes, the teams fought back and forth, tying the game up twice. Ultimately, the Lumberjacks bested the Thunderbirds scoring the final goal of the match in the 81st minute.

Responding to Northern Arizona's first-half goal, Southern Utah's Kamryn Farro scored the equalizer off a penalty kick at the 47th minute.

At minute 62, Kayla Terhune scored her second goal of the spring season and brought NAU back up 2-1 over the Thunderbirds. However, just seven minutes later, SUU's Rachael Hunt came back and achieved another equalizer for Southern Utah.

Following a foul in the box and a red card pulled on SUU, Montgomery earned a penalty kick. To clinch the match, the junior scored the game winner on her third goal of the year. With the point, Montgomery now leads the 'Jacks in goals scored.

Keeping the offensive pressure up on SUU, NAU took ten shots in the second half, inducing two more saves for Kovisto. In comparison, Southern Utah only took a total of eight shots throughout the entire match.

Northern Arizona will look for its third Big Sky win and its second against Southern Utah this upcoming Sunday, March 21. The Lumberjacks will kick off once again in Cedar City at 11 a.m. MST.
