FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 21, 2023) - The Lumberjacks started their season with two 7-0 sweeps against Arizona Christian on Saturday, moving to 2-0 on the season.
NAU started the day off with the 7-0 sweep through morning matches. Sweeping all three doubles matches, Head Coach Maciej Bogusz used the first matches of the season to play around with lineups and get the team settled in.
"I am happy with both of the matches, the team had a good week of practice and it showed on the courts today, the guys looked and felt better as the day went on," Bogusz said.
Facundo Tumosa and doubles pairing Dani Torres found early chemistry at the No. 3 spot, bringing in a 6-2 win to ACU's David Maas and Harry Buttifant. Alex Groves and Piotr Galus followed suit at the No. 1 position to earn the Jacks first point of the day, earning a 6-2 victory against ACU's Hugo Abril and Jonas Wand. Dominik Buzonics and Daniel Dillon finished out doubles with the sweep, earning a 6-4 win while facing the Firestorm's Martin Thomas and Josh Jones.
With the 1-0 lead, NAU headed into singles play as Tumosa led the lineup at No. 1, followed by Galus at No. 2, Groves at No. 3, Buzonics at No. 4, Torres at No. 5, and Maciej Ziomber at No. 6.
Dani Torres earned the Jacks a point at the No. 5 position, picking up the 6-0, 6-0 sweep to Arizona Christian's Maas. Ziomber closed out his matchup at No. 6 with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory to Buttifant.
Buzonics brought in a quick 6-0 lead, finishing up the victory at No. 4 in 6-3 fashion. Tumosa cleaned up at the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-1 victory to ACU's Wand. Galus and Groves finished the clean 7-0 sweep for the Jacks with Galus' 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 slot. Groves bounced back at the No. 3 position after dropping the first set 2-6, coming back to win with a 6-0, 6-0 second and third set.
The Jacks earned another doubles sweep to start off the second match, as doubles pairing's Groves and Galus, Dillon and Tumosa, Ziomber and Buzonics pulled off wins at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 spots respectively.
Heading into singles, the lineup saw some movement with Tumosa staying at the No. 1 spot, followed by Galus at No. 2, Groves at No. 3, Dani at No. 4, Dillon at No. 5, and Morgan Donovan debuting at No. 6.
Donovan impressed the Flagstaff crowd with a quick 6-0, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 spot to start off his season with the Jacks. Groves, Dillon, and Torres followed suit to bring the Jacks to secure the victory, taking the 5-0 lead. Tumosa closed out the matchup at the No. 1 position with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Galus' match at the No. 2 went to the tiebreaker where the transfer stepped up in his Lumberjack debut and earned the 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) victory to end the match.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action next week to take on Mesa CC and Denver in a Saturday double header at the Tennis complex.
