Lumberjacks Top New Mexico State in Day One Relays

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (December 15, 2023) – The first of two days of competition between Northern Arizona and the New Mexico State swimming and diving programs featured six relays and two diving events. It was NAU coming out on top on the scoreboard after day one, winning 62-46 on Friday afternoon at Wall Aquatic Center.

Northern Arizona's divers were also incredibly productive, taking the top seven scores in the 3-meter dives and winning the team diving event.

"It was really fun to do something different," head coach Andy Johns said. "We had some great swims today, and they might be hidden somewhere in the middle of some races. I thought that some of our depth showed out, which is what we are built on. Tomorrow will be another tough meet against a great opponent, so this is good practice for when we have to go back-to-back several days later in the season."

Of the six relays held, the Lumberjacks had the top time in the first four relays before New Mexico State would snatch the final two.

NAU took care of business in the 400-yard medley relay, 300-yard butterfly relay, 300-yard backstroke, and 300-yard breaststroke relays.

The visitors from Las Cruces, New Mexico, had the top times in the 300-yard medley relay and 500-yard freestyle relay.

Tomorrow, the two teams will return to a more traditional 16-event dual meet, with action kicking off from Wall Aquatic Center at 11 a.m.
