PORTLAND, Ore. (February 27, 2023) - Northern Arizona Men's Tennis took the edge to open up Big Sky Conference play with a 6-1 victory at Portland State.
The Jacks bounced back from their first doubles point loss of the season, sweeping the Vikings in singles play. NAU suffered losses on courts one and two to drop the doubles point. Dominik Buzonics and and Maikel De Boes dropped a 7-5 match at the No. 1 followed by Alex Groves and Piotr Galus' first doubles loss of the season in a 6-4 match.
Facundo Tumosa and Daniel Dillon picked up yet another doubles victory at the No. 3 in a dominant 6-3 win. Tumosa continued off of his doubles momentum with a close 7-6, 6-4 victory. Galus put up one of his most convincing victories of the season at the No.2, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-0.
De Boes went the distance at the No. 3 after a tiebreak win in the first set (7-5), going on to comeback after a 6-3 loss in the second set, the freshman turned the narrative around and picked up a 6-3 third set for the victory. Maciej Ziomber moved into the No. 4, with a three set victory, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Dani Torres earned a tiebreaker victory in the first set at the No. 5, going 7-6 (7-4), before picking up the pace in the second set and closing out the match with a 6-4 victory. Groves, bouncing back from doubles, earned the three set victory in 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 fashion with a tough closing set from the senior.
The Lumberjacks are led by sophomore Piotr Galus who has a clean 9-0 singles record this season, while going 8-1 in doubles with Groves and Ziomber. Galus' nine victories this season also leads the Big Sky.
The Jacks will head to Tucson for two tough matches, playing Arizona on Friday and Gonzaga in a neutral site match on Saturday.
