FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 10, 2023) - Picking up the second ITA ranked victory of the season, the Jacks (10-2) earned a 7-0 victory against No. 66 Air Force on Friday night. NAU earned their 10th win of the season while giving the Falcons only their second loss of the season, marking their first to a Big Sky opponent.
The Lumberjacks began their debut back home in Flagstaff with doubles play as Maikel De Boes and Facundo Tumosa paired up at the No. 1, followed by Piotr Galus and Alex Groves at the No. 2, and Dominik Buzonics and Daniel Dillon at the No. 3.
Buzonics and Dillon picked up a 3-2 lead, going up 40-0 in the match before closing out with a 6-3 victory to give the Jacks their first doubles win of the match.
Down 2-4 Groves and Galus picked up a break to begin the campaign to come back, making the match 3-4, before taking the lead back at 6-5 and claiming the 6-6 (7-4) tiebreak win to earn the Jacks the doubles point.
De Boes and Tumosa were down 3-4 before tying things up in the game at 30-30 and tying the match up at 4-4. The duo took the 6-5 lead and went on to the tiebreak where the match went unfinished at 7-8 for NAU due to the doubles point already being decided.
With the 1-0 lead heading into singles play, De Boes started at the No. 1, followed by Tumosa at the No. 2, Galus at the No. 3, Buzonics at the No. 4, Galus at the No. 5, and Ziomber at the No. 6.
Ziomber closed out a 3-3 tie in the first set, taking the 4-3 lead to Jack Brown, going on to clinch the set at 6-3. Ziomber earned the Jacks their second point of the match, claiming the first singles match with a 6-2 second set victory.
De Boes picked up a quick lead against Nick Vroman at the No. 1, going up 4-1 before Vroman battled back to tie things up at 5-5. De Boes picked up the 6-5 lead and and earned the 7-6 tiebreak win. The freshman picked up a 2-0 lead in the second set before going on to earn the 6-4 victory, giving the Jacks their third point.
Down 5-2 in the first set, Tumosa dropped the set 6-4. Tumosa turned things around in the second set taking the early 1-0 lead off an ace serve. NAU's own went on to pick up a break to take a 4-1 lead, winning the set 6-2. Tumosa picked up a 3-0 lead in the third set after winning another break, going on to win at 6-2 to secure the victory for NAU.
Groves broke the 2-2 tie in the first set with Jonathan Mascagni to take the 3-2 lead after a break. Groves close out the first set with a 6-4 victory. Groves fell 2-4 in the second set before coming back to take the 5-4 lead and win the set at 6-4, bringing in the fifth point for NAU.
Dropping a point, Buzonics fell 2-3 before battling back to 4-5, and falling in the first set 6-4. Buzonics picked up an early 2-0 second set lead after a break on Phillip Deaton's serve. NAU's sophomore went on to clinch the second set at 6-2. Buzonics clinched the 6th point for the Jacks claiming a third set win at 6-2.
Galus found a tight lead early, on going up 2-1 to Justin Waldman, before closing out the first set at 6-3. Galus dropped the second set 6-2, before going on to tie up the third set at 3-3. Galus came back and won the third set 6-3, completing the sweep for the Jacks.
The Lumberjacks will continue at home next week with a Wednesday doubleheader against Pratt Community College at 9 a.m. MST, followed by a 2 p.m. MST matchup against Omaha.
