FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 15, 2023) – Northern Arizona Soccer (4-2-2) will be hosting the LMU Lions (5-5-0) this Sunday for the team's final non-conference matchup of the 2023 campaign.
Sunday's match is set to start at 1 p.m. and is free to the public to attend. Live stats will be available here, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Lumberjacks will be eyeing the team's third straight victory after back-to-back shutout wins to Utah Tech and San Diego. LMU suffered a 2-1 loss to the Grand Canyon Lopes on Thursday night in Phoenix as they will look to bounce back into the win column.
NAU's very own
Joey Lujan earned her first Big Sky accolades this week as the conference announced Lujan as defensive player of the week. Lujan found the back of the net against San Diego off of a
Maddie Shafer corner kick as she waited at the back post to put a header goal in, marking her first career goal with the Jacks.
Shafer picked up her second assist of the season against San Diego as she is tied with
Allison Veloz to lead the Jacks in points with four a piece. Veloz scored her second goal of the season off a pass up the middle from
Dai Williams.
In LMU's last time out, Samantha Nieto opened her LMU scoring account with an 84th minute goal, but the Lions fell in a tough battle against Grand Canyon 2-1 on Thursday night in Phoenix. The Antelopes took the lead in the 35th minute with a free kick that found the bottom right corner of the net. It was just the second shot of the night for Grand Canyon and the first on target.
Grand Canyon extended their lead in the 58th minute when a long-distance effort took a deflection off center back Alice Santen and beat JJ Hoover as she was shuffling away from where the ball landed. The Lions were not without opportunities to score as they forced six saves, earned five corners and outshot the Antelopes 10-4.
The Lumberjacks and the Lions have only met up four times in program history, with last year's trip to California ending in a 0-0 tie. The Lions lead the overall series 2-1-1. Last season's matchup between the two teams came in the Jacks final non-conference roadtrip and proved to be a high defensive game, ending in a 0-0 tie in California. NAU outshot the Lions 14-4 while
Trinity Corcoran played all 90 minutes for the Jacks and made one save.
