FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 29, 2024) – The NAU track & field team had three athletes earn Big Sky Athlete of the Week honors following impressive performances on the road.
Nico Young was named Big Sky Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week after he broke the NCAA record in the 5,000-meter at the John Thomas Terrier Classic. His time of 12:57.14 was not only a collegiate record, but is also the first sub-12 minute 5K to be run by a collegiate athlete. Young is the top athlete in the conference and the nation in the event, as well as in the mile and 3,000-meter.
Maggi Congdon earned her first Big Sky Women's Track Athlete of the Week honor of the season after breaking the school and conference record in the mile with a time of 4:30.24 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic. She is currently ranked first in the Big Sky and second in the nation in the event. Congdon also competed in the 3K, running a time of 9:15.67 to put her at the top of the conference in the event.
Mitchell Effing was named Big Sky Men's Field Athlete of the Week following an event win in the long jump at the New Mexico Team Open. He jumped 7.81 meters to take the win, with his mark putting him at the top of the Big Sky and 14
th in the nation. Effing is also first in the conference and seventh in the nation in the triple jump.
